Complete independence is a challenge for those who are physically unable to drive or travel by themselves due to physical or mental impairments. Self-driving cars of the future will mean that a blind person will be able to drive themselves to work, or a paraplegic will no longer have to depend on a friend or family member to escort them to the store.
As the video above shows, TORC Robotics, a Virginia company originated from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, are pioneers of drive-by-wire technology. Amazingly, we can watch as a blind man drives for the first time on a closed course. Not only can he drive straight, but you can see that he's avoiding obstacles and dodging moving hazards as well.
